Guitar Music of Heitor Villa-Lobos
Brazilian composer, 1887- 1959
I was quite surprised to find these editions so easily and readily available. I am not familiar with most of the them but they are presented as a convenience for visitors. The list includes both works by Villa-Lobos as well as works by others written in homage to the great composer and some arrangements of works by the composer. museum web site: "[he] was born on March 5, 1887 on Ipiranga Street, in the Laranjeiras neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. His mother,
Noêmia, raised the children and kept house. His father, Raul worked at the National Library and was an amateur musician.
At the Villa-Lobos house, every Saturday respected musicians of the time would gather to play until the wee hours of the morning. This custom, which lasted for many years, influenced Villa-Lobos’ musical development decisively. Quite young, he began to study. At six, he learned to play cello from his father on a specially adapted viola."
In general, his music includes/combines Brazilian folk and classical elements - many of his works sound virtuosic while being within reach of any dedicated student. BTW - when I first purchased copies of the Preludes, Etudes and the Suite Populaire Bresilienne they were all outrageously expensive ($10 - $20 each!) The edition by Frederick Noad was quite welcomed by all guitarists interested in this music. Note - most editions of music for guitar by Villa-Lobos contain 'errors' - you may need to locate a good teacher or another student of the classical guitar to learn how concert and recording guitarists approach changes to these published editions.
