Building a Classical Guitar Recorded Music Collection
Suggestions from guitarist Dale Reagan
- start with what you can afford (duh!) This is the same for
recordings as it is for music. Some of the smaller or niche labels
provide real bargains with super recording quality and exceptional artists
(i.e. the Naxos label)
- There is a reason (or six!) for an artist to reach a high level of
visibility and (usually) to have a large number of published recordings.
- I suggest starting with recordings that cover many styles or periods of
music (instead of containing music from only one period or one composer,
i.e. an all Bach recording.)
- I have tried to include both long established and new artists in the
selections below
- Andres Segovia dominates the listing on this page to to his tremendous
contribution (as well as a very large number of recordings; it is quite
interesting to listen to recordings from the various seasons of this
significant artist.)
- You should also consider the free
MP3s described here.
-
The artists below are some of my favorites (Julian Bream, John Williams,
Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Martha Masters, Ana Vidovic); your mileage, of course,
will vary... :)
Whether you are a performer or not, I believe that it is quite helpful to
listen to recordings (AND live performances!) by NON-guitarists as well as guitar duos and
ensembles. Listening to recording by any of the currently or previously
recognized great musicians on any instrument can be quite helpful in
your growth as a musician. Some suggestions follow and include
recordings of solo piano, string ensemble, solo cello, guitar duo, banjo! and
bluegrass gospel!:
