Copy of Nicolas Lupot Guitar
2007 Update: I have had several comments since this was originally posted in 1998 - the consensus seems to be that the instrument is most likely of
20th century 'design' (i.e. with enhancements beyond what might have been found on a 'true' Lupot period
guitar from the early to mid 1800's; also, there is confirmation that Lupot made
violins but no confirmation that he made guitars) and most likely built after 1900. Also, based on the design and features
this guitar is more
German than French in style and function.
This guitar label shows: " Copie De Nicolas Lupot Luthier rue Croix-des-petits-champs a Paris l'an 1824"
The instrument has quite a few 'dings' but is playable. I would welcome
information on the possible origins of this instrument (i.e. who made such
copies and when.). Please send your comments to me here.
- The body of the instrument is 'curved out' from the top and bottom up to
the center of the back of the guitar.
- There is an extended, 'flying' fingerboard.
- It has a 'clock-key' neck attachment (I am told that this was quite common
up until the early 1900's)
- The body appears to be made from European curly maple.
- For comparison, I have included a few pictures with this instrument next
to a Ramirez 1a.
- Many of these images have been 'enhanced' so the colors, while and
indication, may be somewhat misleading. The comparison images with the
Ramirez do provide some perspective on this.
- Additional tuner, clock-key and joint photos can be found
here.
