2008-9 East Coast Guitar Concerts/Festivals/Events (USA)

Winter 2009

February 28 - March 1 - 10th Annual Columbus State University Guitar Symposium, Columbus, Ga.  Artists include:  Jeffrey McFadden, Thomas Kirchoff, Dale Kavenaugh, Matteo Mela, Lorenzo Micheli, Marko Feri.  The symposium includes:  concerts, master classes and a competition (two divisions - grades 9-12 and Collegiate/Graduate levels.).

March 26, 2009 - Savannah, Ga - Guitarist Manuel Barrueco performs at Temple Mickve Israel as part of the Savannah Music Festival (tickets $45.)  [[ The last classical guitarist to perform during this festival was David Russell, in 2006.]] 

Fall 2008

Notes about the Wofford College Troubadour Series AND the Middle Tennessee Guitar Festival - In addition to presenting a slate of exceptional performers, Admission to the series is free and open to the public - truly a model of what can be done with local, regional, national and private arts funding.  Of course my guess is that the organizers would be happy to accept your contributions - support the arts!  :)

July 13-25, 2008 - Winston-Salem, NC - North Carolina School of the Arts Summer Guitar Workshop. directed by Joseph Pecoraro. Resident and guest artists include: Luke Payne, David Burgess,Robert Trent, and the Blue Ridge Guitar Quartet.   "The NCSA Summer Guitar Workshop is an outstanding opportunity for young artists to develop their love for and abilities on the classical guitar. High School, College, and Junior High students of all levels of experience are eligible for admission."

July 16-19, 2008 - Alexandria Guitar Festival and Suzuki Guitar Institute (July 12-20), Alexandria, VA. Artists include: Solo Duo (Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli), Bruce Holzman, Adam del Lamonte, Marcin Dylla, Ana Vidovic, Nathan Fischer, Andrew Zohn, Kevin Ernste, Ricardo Cobo and Julian Gray.

September 30, 2007 - World-renowned classical guitarist, Christopher Parkening and baritone, Jubilant Sykes will be in concert Sunday, Sept. 30 at 4 pm in the Roswell UMC Sanctuary. May 26 - 31, 2006 - The Stetson International Guitar Workshop - (Near Orlando Florida) - UPDATE - this has been cancelled. (when reviewed on 2/22/06.) 

October 10-15, 2006  Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Convention - Classical Guitar Festival and Competition, Columbus Georgia, USA.  This is an annual, international gathering of guitarists - a great festival to hear exceptional performers, try out super guitars and in general, have a fun time with other guitarists.

February 21-22, 2004 - Columbus State University Guitar Competition and Symposium Columbus, Georgia, USA  Andrew Zohn, Director, Guest artists:  Adam Holzman, Bruce Holzman, Patrick Kearney, Lorenzo Micheli, Leo Welch.  [I attended this event in 2004 and found the venue and and the competition level to be exceptional.  It was worth the ~6 hour drive.  It was also great to see young players in the mix (elementary, middle and high school.)  The collegiate/graduate level performances were quite good - it is great to see that we have such talent.]

April 1-4, 2004 -  The Annual Appalachian Guitar Fest and Competition, Boone, NC, Douglas James , Festival Director; Featuring Guest Artists:  Aron/Ali Duo, Michale Chpadelaine, Rucco/James Duo, and Stanley Yates.. 

May 28 - June 2, 2004 - The Stetson International Guitar Workshop - recitals and personal coaching by the distinguished artist faculty. Stephen Robinson, Artistic Director, The Canadian Guitar Quartet, Roland Dyens, Eduardo Fernandez, Oscar Ghiglia, Adam Holzman, Bruce Holzman, Douglas James, Judical Perroy and Jason Vieaux..

June 20- July 16,  2004 - Killington Music Festival  - The renowned Killington Music Festival announces its second annual classic guitar workshop to take place June 20 - July 16, 2004. Guitarist and teacher Gerald Klickstein will direct four weeks of intensive study at the beautiful Vermont resort of Killington.

July 10-14, 2004 - ECU Summer Guitar Workshop - Greenville, NC.  Featuring Andrew Zohn, Jeffrey McFadden and workshop Director,  Dr. Elliot Frank. "The East Carolina University Summer Guitar Workshop is aimed at students and aspiring  professionals of all ages who are interested in improving and acquiring skills in classical  guitar performance. The workshop is open to classical guitarists of all ages."

April 4-7, 2002 -  The Seventh Annual Appalachian Guitar Fest and Competition, Boone, NC, Douglas James , Festival Director; Featuring International Guest Artists:: Adam Holzman, Patrick Kearny, and Andrew Zohn. 

June 7-12, 2002 - The Stetson International Guitar Workshop - recitals and personal coaching by the distinguished artist faculty of Stephen Robinson, Artistic Director, Denis Azabagic, Arnaud Dumond, Roland Dyens, Nicholas Goluses, Julian Gray, Bruce Holzman, Eleftheria Kotzia, David Leisner, Peter McCutcheon, Michael Newman, Laura Oltman and Steven Thachuk.

June 12-21, 2002 - South Carolina Guitar Camp and Competition - Columbia, SC.  A week of concerts, classes, ensembles and a student competition.  Artist faculty: Mike Connors, Elliot Frank, Alan Knight, Rod Lewis, Greg Shirer, Andrew Zohn. 

June 25-27, 2002 - ECU Summer Guitar Workshop - Greenville, NC.  Featuring Jason Vieaux, Andrew Zohn, Patrick Kearne and workshop Director,  Dr. Elliot Frank. July 7 - August 2, 2002 - Killington Music Festival  - The renowned Killington Music Festival has added a classical guitar division to its world-famous offerings. Distinguished guitarist and teacher, Gerald Klickstein, will direct four weeks of intensive study at the beautiful Vermont resort of Killington. Undergraduate and graduate college students, young professionals and advanced high school students are invited to apply. Lessons and classes will cover all aspects of guitar performance including musical interpretation, technique, practice methods, performance preparation, career development and more. 

Fall 2002 - Concerts at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.

  • September 22: September Concerts: Boccherini guitar quintet 3:00, Christopher Berg and USC String Faculty USC School of Music Recital Hall (This is the one with the great fandango!)
  • September 29: September Concerts: Christopher Berg, solo guitar music 3:00 (Albeniz and Barrios) USC School of Music Recital Hall
