Savannah Classical Guitar

So what does a guitarist do when they travel?   Try out guitars, of course!

While working in the Los Angeles (LA) area of California (I was actually living in Marina del Rey, working in Santa Monica and commuting from Savannah, Ga.)  I discovered a wonderful guitar shop.  I was introduced to the shop by a a superb guitarist from the area (Martha Masters.)  All she said was that there as a nice guitar shop close to where she lived; so of course I thought that it would be another 'music store' (i. e. lots of stuff including some nice guitars.)  I thought it was strange that I had to make an appointment, though.

Well, it was a bit more and a lot less...   Trilogy Guitars offers walls full of guitars in one large show room - which was reserved just for me!  I'm not sure about you guys but I had never been to such a place; I could play any instrument and really hear it, examine, enjoy it (no kids banging on pianos, drums, cranking up amps, I didn't have to hide in a small closet of a practice room, etc., etc.)   Prior to visiting I explained that I was just 'shopping';   boy was it tuff!   During the first visit the price ranges of the guitars that I explored was $1000 to $15,000.   Note that a small stage area allows you to explore an instrument in a traditional manner.  Also, as you play the guitars on the wall will resonate creating a (hopefully!) wonderful aural experience.  ALSO, Trilogy hosts concerts in this venue - it's a great place to experience an intimate concert experience - check their web site for scheduled events.

I have made many visits since the first visit (pictures elsewhere on this site), but one of the most interesting was when I had a opportunity to explore a rare, historic 1931 Hauser I - made for Andrès Segovia.  The guitar bears the inscription, "Pour mon cher ami, le grande maestro Andrès Segovia fait de H. Hauser, Munchen 1931."   ("For my dear friend, the great maestro Andrès Segovia made by H. Hauser, Munich 1931.")  The instrument has a colorful history of being stolen/lost and then found and finally returned to the rightful owner - and now it is for sale (2007.)  After playing the guitar I called my wife and told that I had sold the house so I could by this incredible guitar - there was a very long pause...  :)  (and this Hauser I is still for sale.)

This guitar has the sweetest sound of any guitar that I have explored (in the last ~30 years I have probably played ~150+ really fine instruments, most built after 1960.)  I was extremely surprised to find that an instrument of this age could have such a full, gorgeous sound - wish it was in my budget range...  If you are a collector of fine and rare guitars and if you are in the market for a vintage Hauser I guitar this is certainly an instrument for consideration (perhaps a guitar collector on the east coast who will let me visit the instrument?)

Would you like to hear this instrument played by a concert level guitarist?  We are in luck!  Andrew York recorded an entire album with this instrument.  You can listen to samples of this 1931 Hauser I guitar on Andrew York's web site (select: Discography, then Hauser Sessions.).
