A short Guide to Guitar compositions of

Angelo Gilardino

(From a RMCG posting by AG on 4/30/2002)

(From the keyboard of AG...)
Because it is a long list, I take the freedom of suggesting to all those who might be interested in approaching my music, to follow the most direct and effective path:

1) The "Studi di virtuosità e di trascendenza"
2) The Two Sonatas

This is music that everyone who has a good musical background and who has dealt with Villa-Lobos Preludes and Studies can work well.

Those who have an acquaintance with 20th century historical music - Stravinsky, Bartok, Webern - may find an interest also in my solo guitar works written after the Studies and the Sonatas:

Variazioni sulla Follia
Musica per l'Angelo della Melancholia
Variazioni sulla Fortuna (included in an anthology entitled "Fortune 1993)
Winterzeit

My other solo guitar works (Canzone Notturna, Abreuana, Appaloosa, Araucaria, Luceat, Trepidazioni per Thebit, Estrellas para Estarellas, Tenebrae factae sunt, Ocram) were written between 1965 and 1973, when I did not think of myself as of a future composer - despite my background studies in composition - and may have an interest for those scholars and players who know the "true" music I wrote since when I took seriously the composition with the first book of the Studies (1981) and I retired - as a consequence - from concert career.

I think - but this is just an opinion - that the most relevant - though not the most easily readable and enjoyable to listen to - of my music is in the concertos with orchestra I wrote from 1996 to 2001. Also, to those who have an acquaintance with atonal music, the four Concertos for solo guitar and guitar groups I wrote from 1991 to 1995:

Concerto d'Estate
Concierto de Cordoba
Poema d'inverno
Concerto d'autunno

may offer a "very different" outlook of what is normally considered a guitar ensemble.

There are in my output also "divertissements" I wrote as a pleasure of mine, "in the style of...": Fernando Sor (Fantasia Concertante on the Gran Solo) and "Canzoni Dimenticate", a set of seven romantic melodies I wrote for each different instrument in duos with a guitar which plays "Romance anonimo" on the background. Actually, these melodies have been dictated to me by the ghost of the Spanish flamenco guitarist Paco el Murciano - a fellow of the Russian composer Mickhail Glinka, in my evaluation the true author of "Romance Anonimo".

All of my music above listed is published by Edizioni Musicali Bèrben, with the exception of the "Fantasia Concertante" (Editions Orphée) and "Winterzeit" (Mel Bay, in an anthology edited by Stanley Yates).

There are in the list of my works also books which I wrote as a professor of guitar and as a scholar, but they are in Italian and I do not believe they may have an interest for readers who have at hand similar treatises written in English.
