"Concierto de Aranjuez" was written on 1939 at the request of Regino Sainz
de la Maza
supported by the Marques de Bolarque. Rodrigo's daughter (Cecilia, who is
alive and who takes care
of Ediciones Musicales Rodrigo) was born on 1941. Actually, the work is
inspired to the gardens of
Aranjuez, the Summer residence of Spanish kings, where also Domenico
Scarlatti was a guest.
Rodrigo's music has much to be understood in terms of the "aural
landscape" - a definition created by a
Spanish poet - and it has been the object of an essay by Raymond Calcraft,
which establishes a sort of
brotherhood between the composer and another Joaquin, the Spanish painter
Sorolla. If you really
want to appreciate the poetical square "Concierto de Aranjuez", when going
to Madrid, visit the Museo
Sorolla - easy to find, it is the house of the painter - and you will catch
the point.
