Concertos for guitar and orchestra

It is the subject of a dissertation, not of an email. I will mention only
three masterpieces.

The first significant example of a very special treatment of the orchestra
in a concerto with the guitar is that of Maurice Ohana, with his splendid
work entitled "Tres Graficos", largely inspired in the cante jondo. It was
composed on 1950 and revised on 1957. Impossible to describe the magic
colors of this work and the hot atmosphere created around the guitar.

A breathtaking Concerto - with a very peculiar orchestra: only woodwind
instruments, a trumpet, celesta, string trio and percussion - was written on
1970 by Richard Rodney Bennett.

An outstanding example of refinement in the orchestration is shown in the
Concerto for guitar and orchestra (1977) by the Croatian composer, Miroslav
Miletic.

Another dozen at least of works are equally deserving to be taken as
examples of how a dialogue between a guitar and orchestra can open
fascinating musical perspectives (Asafiev, Tansman, Santorsola, Dodgson,
Absil, Bettinelli, etc.). I cannot deal with them here now, mainly because I
am taking care of the print of my own, fourth concerto with guitar and
orchestra, and my publisher would not forgive a delay in the delivery of the
score.
