Dear Lavinia,

among guitarists who play, give concerts, make records, who transcribe, who
compose (we had recently a very instructive lesson about how to become
composers!), who teach, the percentage of those who have a thorough (no
matter whether academical or earned by other paths of studies) background in
theory, harmony, counterpoint and musical forms (let alone orchestration),
does not go beyond a 10%. Perhaps I am optimistic.

Among the disadvantages of being a normal musician - I mean, making music
after having studied music and while steadily following to study music - you
can number the fact that, whilst you know, admit and complain your ignorance
before the Music Ocean and you restlessly fight to make your ignorance a bit
smaller - you meet a lot of those people who, belonging to the masterful
90%, will show you how happy they are with their ignorance.

Before such a powerful show of Innate Light, the normal musicians have
always been ready to admit that studying music is useless, but it seems it
is not enough. They have now to confess that it is a guilt. Can you write a
four voice fugue in two hours? Can you orchestrate a piano piece of 10
minutes in half a day? Shame. Hide your technical skills and join the happy
tribe. Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Bartok, studied counterpoint? What a pity,
if they had ignored it, they would have been much better. Almost as a modern
guitarist.

Ciao.
