Funny Characters in E-mail
This is a short note about mail programs & HTML
- A reminder for all - at this time the mail list software does not easily handle messages
that include 'HTML' or other special encoding. When posting to the list set your email
program to send 'plain text' messages.
- "Well gee, how can I tell such things?" If you attempt to use special fonts
and formatting (bold, italics, colors, etc.) and send a message with such special codes
then chances are good that the mail list software may not process it OR that if the
message does make it to the list that strange (and perhaps interesting) symbols and 'extra
stuff' will show up in your messages...
- If you go to the 'preferences' or 'configuration' or 'settings' or 'options' (or
something similar) section of your email software, chances are good that you will find a
'button' or 'check mark block' or some other way of controling the setting. In Eudora PRO,
I select 'T'ools, then 'O'ptions, then 'S'tyled text (HTML) and
make sure that the circle that is labled 'send plain text only' is selected (you DO NOT
want to send 'quoted printable' text - this is essentially the same as HTML in
email.) Eudora also has the option of setting this to 'ask me each time''; that way I
could choose the setting for each message that I send.
Eventually, mail list software will be developed to automatically convert all messages
to plain text and thus, avert this sort of problem. Why not send formatted mail? -
because not everyone has an email program capable of handling it...
