If you want to customise the way your messages are delivered, you have to go to http://groups.yahoo.com  and create a "membership" (a free operation, but one that will require you to create a logon ID and password). Once you have logged in as a member, navigate to the ClassicalGuitarMailingList page at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClassicalGuitarMailingList/ and click on "Edit My Membership." This will allow you to choose between receiving individual messages or a digest from the list, suspend messages altogether (useful when you're going on vacation), and change the e-mail address to which messages should be sent.

MESSAGE ARCHIVES

To view message archives, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ClassicalGuitarMailingList/.  You will be able to view messages by month of posting, or by searching for a specific text.

ATTACHMENTS, COPYRIGHTS, AND OTHER UNPLEASANT MATTERS

Please do not enclose attachments in messages to the list. The mailing list will automatically delete them. If you have something you would like to send to other members in the form of an attachment, please post a note describing what you would like to send, and then send it privately to whoever asks for it. If it is something vital that I feel should be available to all members, I may put it in the "files" section, available from the ClassicalGuitarMailingList page whose address is given several times above.

Likewise, please do not send "test" messages to the list -- in other words, messages with no content (or something like "Sorry, only a test"), just to see if your e-mail is working.

This is an international list, with members from all over the world. It should be noted, however, that the primary language of most of the members here is English. Posts in another language will likely be understood by only a few members, and somewhat irritating to everyone else.

Whatever the circumstances, do NOT send any copyrighted material to the list, even in text form. Doing so could cause this list to be shut down, either by the authorities or the service provider. Anyone who posts copyrighted material to the list will be permanently banned from membership here.

If you have a guitar or other merchandise you would like to offer for sale privately (in other words, not commercially), you may post one advertisement here per week. Please do not abuse this privilege, or ads will be banned altogether. Please note that this merchandise MUST be relevant to the classical guitar.

List standards are pretty generic -- no personal attacks, no excessive off- topic discussions, no illegal posts (such as posting tablature for a copyrighted work), no obscenity, and no spamming (this includes both sending spam through this list, and grabbing everyone's address here and sending them spam through a separate distribution list, even if it doesn't go to this list itself). Violators of the last three items are subject to automatic removal from this list without additional warning. Furthermore, comments about the superiority of one nation, culture, economic or political system have NO PLACE on this list, nor do insults, whether directed at an individual or a group, based on their race, nationality, sex, religion, sexual orientation, or other inherent traits. Neither do any other political debates that have nothing to do with the classical guitar.

One general rule is that private messages should not be reposted to this list (or anywhere else. for that matter). There is one exception to this: when one member replies to another with a private message including threats against that person. If anyone receives such a post, they should immediately forward a copy to the list- maintainer. The list-maintainer reserves the right to permanently ban from the list any member who threatens another, even in private mail.

DISCLAIMER: This is an unmoderated mailing list. The list-maintainer has no prior knowledge or control over any material submitted to this list, nor any way of removing a message once it has been posted. The legal responsibility for the content of any message remains entirely with the original author of the message. Neither the list-maintainer nor the service provider hosting the list bears any responsibility for the content of any messages posted here. The list-maintainer reserves the right to remove any member from the list for any cause if, in the sole opinion of the list-maintainer, that member is engaging in conduct detrimental to the list.

"WHY WAS I KICKED OFF THE LIST?"

Every so often, I will receive a plaintive message from a member of this list, saying that they tried to post and were told they were not subscribed. They wonder why I removed them from the list.

Answer: I didn't.

The Internet is, as any of us know, far from a bug-free environment. ISPs go down, temporarily, all the time. When they do, and they are part of the path an e-mail is taking from its source to its destination, the e-mail will often get returned as "undeliverable."

Most mailing-list software is set up to handle this situation without human intervention. If one or two messages bounce back, it ignores them. If a large number of messages come back, however, the software assumes that the subscriber has shut down their account without leaving the list. To keep from continually sending messages to (what seems like) a no-longer-existing address, the software will automatically sign the account off the list.

Please note that this can happen ANYWHERE along the path from your computer to the host site for this list. It doesn't mean that your ISP is the one bouncing messages -- it could be a node ten or more jumps away from you.

So, when you get told that you are no longer subscribed to this list, it is generally the case of an ISP going down along your path at precisely the wrong time, and bouncing back enough messages to trigger the software's auto-unsubscribe feature. (It has happened to me more times than I care to remember on other lists.) Simply subscribe again, and everything will be fine.
